What is butyl rubber? What are the production methods?

I. Introduction to butyl rubber.

Butyl rubber is a kind of synthetic rubber, synthesized from isobutylene and a small amount of isoprene. The finished product is not easy to leak, and is generally used to manufacture the inner tube of automobile and aircraft wheels. Butyl rubber is a copolymer of isobutylene and isoprene, which was put into industrial production in 1943. It has good chemical and thermal stability, and is most prominent for its air and water tightness. It is mainly used in the manufacture of various rubber products such as inner tubes, steam pipes, water tires, dam underlays and gaskets.

The greatest advantage of butyl rubber: it is airtight. It is also resistant to heat, ozone, ageing and chemicals, and has shock-absorbing and electrically insulating properties. Disadvantages: slow vulcanisation and poor processing properties.

At present, there are six or seven kinds of production processes of butyl rubber in China, mainly steaming method, frying method, extrusion method, microwave method, radiation method, high temperature continuous catalytic method, chemical mechanical method, etc., but no matter what method is used, the purpose is to use the most economical and scientific method to turn the waste butyl rubber from the mesh structure into a linear structure.

Ⅱ, the butyl rubber production methods

1, slurry method.

Slurry method is chloromethane as a diluent, H2O-AlCl3 as the initiating system, at low temperature (-100 ℃ or so) isobutylene and a small amount of isoprene through the cationic polymerization of the production.

2. Solution method.

Traditional slurry method of synthetic butyl rubber production process technology is mature, but due to the low polymerization reaction temperature, cooling equipment is huge, polymerization kettle continuous operation cycle is short, high energy consumption (1kg of rubber energy consumption of about 35 ~ 55MJ), in order to be able to improve the reaction temperature, the solution method of synthesis of butyl rubber with a lot of research.
